This is an abstract wall hanging that can be viewed vertically or horizontally.

The wall hanging is made from cotton fabric and cotton batting. There are three triangle pockets on the back  and two bamboo hanging rods included so, also have to do is center the hanging on a picture nail, or push pin.

The entire piece is heavily quilted with black thread, the black stitching on white is visible from across the room and texture of the black on black is visible up close.

This is an original wall hanging featuring a purple artichoke inspired by my other obsession, gardening. I started with a sketch of an artichoke and cut the pieces out of fabric and accented them using purple and green metallic Lumiere paints, trying to recreate the chiaroscuro technique used by oil painters.

The wall hanging measures 7 inches wide by 9.5 inches tall.It is made from cotton fabric and stuffed with Warm and Natural brand batting. The back is also black.

The colored fabric is discharged dyed. I like discharge dyeing because of the variation of the results. Using green fabric sometimes the blues bleach-out, leaving greens and yellows, but using varying strengths and exposures I got some pretty blue-greens, turquoises, and other water-like colors, emerge from the solid green fabric.

The quilt measures approximately 9.25″ wide, by 12.25″ tall. It is made from cotton fabric, and batting, and quilted with cotton thread. There is also embroidery with green embroidery floss.

The colored fabric is discharged dyed. Pretty blue-greens, turquoises, and other water-like colors, emerged after bleaching green fabric.

I almost always work from a template, so this was a real first for me. I didn’t realize what I liked about the quilt until after it was together, I like the way the focus on the white shifts from positive to negative space. It’s quite an interesting effect,  like figure-ground vase, also known as Rubin’s face, the eye doesn’t know which to focus on, or both!
